The Dangers of Texting: On the Road and off
.
Written by Casey Truman , Staff Writer
How many people do you know text while driving? Do you yourself text while driving?
We’ve all heard the stories, and heard the facts: Texting while driving is dangerous. About 56% of teens text while driving (note: These statistics are based on teens who volunteered; the true percentage is higher.)
-Jan. 7th: “When Alex Brown, 17, died… authorities told her parents she was texting on her cell phone while driving, and she wasn’t wearing a seat belt.”
-Jan. 28th: School teacher lost control of her truck on the interstate; police add the fact that she was texting seconds before the actual crash as a contributing factor to her death.
-Jan, 22nd: A student is tried in court for vehicular Homicide, after killing his teacher when, “checking his phone for a text.”
The death toll continues to rise and the ages of those which are victims in these headlines, are usually within the range of 15-20.
Texting accidents are not just limited to cars, and/or trucks. An airplane pilot was just reprimanded for texting while flying a plane straight past the airport and didn’t reroute until the airport notified him that he had overshot the landing sight by 250 miles. This not only caused a major inconvenience for the passengers but it put them in danger. If it wasn’t for the airport to check in on the pilot, the airport could have called National security and they could have shout down the plane.
Here is another one, my very good friend David was hit by a car in his neighborhood by trying to protect a 2 year old that would have died on impact. The little boy walked away with only a broken arm. David nearly died at the age of 8 years old , he was held at the hospital for the critical conditions he had sustain from the car accident for more than 2 months. The woman who hit him was drinking and texting at the same time. She could have killed one of those children that day.
Texting no longer is just a fun way to just talk to your friend but it is a way to get yourself killed for not paying enough attention to your surroundings. I know that half of you will disregarded this story by the title but I say as a friend to most of you be careful because the first time you slip up…… it might be your last.

Carlin Littles – Entertainment Editor
My mother blames my “delayed entrance” to the world on the person I am today. Ultimately, it was the jerk chicken that caused the set back, but none the less, as my dad stopped to ensure he had enough food for the hours he was about to endure, my debut was pushed back an hour. “You’ve come a long way, baby,” my mom tells me now. As a child, I was afraid of everything: sand, spiders, sleeping without socks. At sixteen, I am now the entertainment editor of The Talon and not only will I walk in the sand, but I’ll bury myself in it too. If all great things take time, my father’s hunger on the evening of my birth ensured my success. Now, my ultimate goal is to do the same with this newspaper, and outlet of stories, ideas, feelings, and opinions that I hope will continue to grow with time.

Rebekah Gay-Culture Editor
Written by Rebekah Gay, Culture Editor
Hey. I’m Rebekah. There’s not really much to say about me. I like writing, drawing, any animal in particular (even the ones that nobody likes), and going out on the weekends with my boyfriend. I also enjoy music. The kind of music I listen to depends on what I’m feeling at the point in time. I am fifteen years old. I am the editor for Culture, and I am probably the youngest editor in the group. I’m in the 10th grade, and have been in the newspaper for two years. I am one of the people you would probably see out on the side of the road, holding up one of those “Go Green: Use Less Fuel” signs. I am against global warming, and I protest whenever I hear about anyone poaching or hunting out-of-season. My goal is to better the newspaper by picking interesting topics and trying to develop interesting from these topics. There is so much to learn from Culture, and the things you learn are extremely cool…Many people say that to promote themselves, but I am telling the truth when I say that the cultures in our school can really surprise you.

Monique Boileau – Staff Writer
I’m Monique. I’m a pretty simple person– I like music, art, chocolate, and my dog. Hopefully, though, I can get my deeper thoughts across in my articles. I write for the Culture and the Entertainment section of The Talon. In Culture, I try to focus on topics that our school can relate to or things that happen here at Forest Hill. In Entertainment, I like to inform students of when and where upcoming plays, concerts, etc., will be happening in the West Palm Beach area as well as things our school is involved in.
As for myself, I’m in 11th grade and I’d love to get some more ideas from people at Forest Hill, so if you see me around school let me know what you’d like to see in the Entertainment or Culture sections!
