The faculty came out on top of Wednesday night’s First Annual Faculty vs. Students basketball game narrowly beating the seniors 83-80, despite a variety of unusual calls against the seniors such as face mask, dress code and patty cake. At the end of the third quarter with the faculty in the lead, Mrs. Stafford tried calling the game due to rain. Without the unorthodox calls, it’s easy to say the seniors would have won despite “The Real McCoy’s” 56 points which includes his three crowd rousing dunks.

Whether one considers the new decade to begin or end with 2010, this year has nonetheless been the end to one of the greatest eras of pop culture: boy bands, a group of three to six males that appeal to all females and do not play instruments for their musical talent is in pop music and dance.

I once truly believed that the Spice Girls would marry N*Sync and the world would be full of half-British, singing, dancing babies (although British singing, goal-kicking babies are welcome too, David Beckham is no artist and Lance Bass would most likely prefer Beckham to Posh Spice.) Unfortunately, I did not foresee the death of all boy bands, that would cause humiliation to any all male multi-talented, singing troupe. Nor do girls fight over which “Spice they get to be”.

Browsing the “Billboard” top pop songs, there are two all male bands, “Boys Like Girls” and “Owl City”. However, I must argue the key component “boy bands”. Have you ever seen either of these groups dance? Personally, as I sit here trying to dance to “Fireflies”, I begin convulsing into these fits that are neither synchronized with the music nor comparable to the Backstreet Boys. According to their own profile on Myspace.com, “electronica/pop” is how Owl City labels their music. So close, yet, entirely missing the concept of “boy band”. Our quest continues… Boys Like Girls considers the genre they play to be “alternative/emo/rock”, which I must add is even further from the 90s pop we have come to miss. Thus, all male bands are not the same as “boy bands”.

What is the cause of this? Perhaps the teenybopper supporters realized instruments were more exciting than footwork. It may have been that the lipsynching band, “O-Town”, found on the MTV reality show, “Making the Band”, ruined the career of every boy band by exposing their uninteresting, scripted lives via television. Regardless of the cause, this trend is not like leggings, side pony-tails, and Molly Ringwald in “The Secret Life of the American Teenager”, which were all a large part of the 80s pop culture. The singing, dancing, and acting tri-fecta is something our generation, as well as many to come, will never see. No comeback can me made without its King. How could boy bands return without Michael Jackson, the “King of Pop” and member of the most influential boy band, The Jackson 5?

Unless endorsed by Disney Channel, no boy band can survive the painful critiques of women that are not satisfied by a band lacking guitars, drums, and anything that makes an artist a “musician”. Even the Jonas Brothers that play their own music have begun to fall apart. As Joe works on his “acting” career and Kevin dedicates time to his new wife, Nick attempts to go solo. Has America lost its last boy band? Not entirely; a band’s popularity is no longer rated on the intensity of the lead singer’s pelvic thrust. Now, it is the music and guitar solos that listeners find seductive. However, the two still receive the same volume of screaming pleasure.

Prom is your final school dance and a step closer to graduation, preparing for prom is full of nostalgia, in-decisions, and nerve reck. Yet when it all boils down it’s all worth it. Preparing for prom could be easy, or hard for you depending on what kind of person you are. The biggest thing that every one stresses over is what to wear, especially girls since their wardrobe consists more then just a black on white tuxedo. Choosing your prom dress is very decisive so here’s a checklist that will help set you on the right track.

Perfect Prom Checklist

There are six weeks before prom: picking out the perfect prom dress

_ Things to take in mind when picking your prom dress.

keep in mind what people are wearing this year. A few examples of what’s in this year are fitted shapes with striking colors and delicate embroidery. Curvy dresses girded with structured undergarments will trumpet your femininity, while soft fabrics…silk and chiffon overlays, lace bordering and beaded hemlines…will announce your elegance. Necklines tend to be straight across, with or without straps. Backs that are low cut with one strap per side are center stage. A-lines with floor length skirts are most popular.

* Also remember to pick a figure faltering dress, a dress that does not complement your figure is like wearing a lamp shade as a dress. This is very important please keep in mind.

* Another thing dresses which have cuts and slits in unflattering places and which expose too much cleavage are out. Romantic soft flowing fabrics are more the fashion at the moment. Don’t over do it with your dress keep glitter at a minimum and any thing that seems like too much or too harsh.

* Although having the perfect prom dress is a long awaited fantasy, choose something that reflects your personality.

Next important thing is your hair.

* Pick a hair style that suits your dress theme.

* If wearing a heavy jeweled neckless, style your hear in an elegant up-do.

_Four weeks before Prom

*Make any nail appointments and Salon appointments ahead of time (Do not leave this for the last minute unless you want to do your own nails and hair)

* If you have already picked out your dress try it on again and see if any alterations are needed take care of this now so that you don’t have to worry about it later.

* The worst thing at prom is getting blisters on your feet. So break into your newly bought prom shoes. This will help you get use to them and feel more comfortable wearing them.

The most important thing to remember is to feel comfortable with what you are wearing, whether you choose the classic look, with a long flowy prom dress, or the sweet and sexy look. Prom night is your night, and it’s a night you’ll always remember, so make it worth while!!!

Today St.Patrick’s Day is widely celebrated in America by Irish and Non-Irish. It is named after Saint Patrick the commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland. In modern-day Ireland St.Patrick Day has traditionally been a religious occasion. In fact, up until the 1970’s,Irish laws mandated that pubs be close on March 17. St.Patrick’s first parade was not in Ireland, but in the U.S. Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City on March 17,1762. In the U.S.,Australia,U.K., and New Zealand celebrate it with much fervor. By having parades, wearing the color green, drinking green beer, and listening and dancing to Irish music. St.Patrick’s Day is celebrated not only as a mark of respect to a great saint, but also as a reflection of the cultural tradition of Ireland and the growing sense of it’s nationalistic pride. The main food that they feast on in Ireland on St.Patrick’s Day is Irish bacon and cabbage,or corn beef and vegetables such as carrots, potatoes, and cabbage. Some symbol’s that represent St.Patrick’s Day are shamrocks, a four-leaf clover, Leprechauns, and a pot of gold. Want to be lucky this St. Patrick’s Day? Follow this advice: 1. Find a four-leaf clover. 2. Wear green (so you don’t get pinched). 3. Kiss the blarney stone. 4. Catch a Leprechaun if you can.

Born in West Palm Beach, where she currently resides, Christina was born on July 8th, 1994. Currently a sophomore, she is in the IB program and has many accomplishments she is determined to achieve.

She is a very nice, caring person. If you give her respect she will give it in return. She is very sarcastic and loves to laugh. But she can also get an attitude at times.

Christina is very interested in art and photography. She also loves to play tennis and football. Very serious about her studies, is a bit of a procrastinator, but always gets the job done.

Her inspiration is her mother. Her mother is a single-parent, and currently is going to PBCC (now PBSC) and working as a medical assistant for 17 years. She hopes to be just as independent and confident as her mother.

Gangs are defined as “a group of people who through organization, formation, and assembly share a common identity and use it to do criminal activity.” Gangs are responsible for roughly half of all homicides and other crimes in major cities. There are over 21,000 existing gangs with 731,000 active members some of the biggest gangs are MS-13, 18th Street, Latin Kings, Bloods, Crips, and also Folk Nation. From this huge number of active gang members they estimated that 49 percent of gang members were Hispanic, 37 percent were black, 8 percent white, 5 percent Asian, and 1 percent had another ethnicity.

Now the real question: Why would someone join a gang? You might think it’s just a big group of people with 1 person in charge, and that 1 person is telling you what to do and how to do it. If you don’t obey you get jumped by your own brothers or members. The truth is that it’s still something that more and more kids are getting into for a variety of reasons. For one, gangs are known to make a lot of money and they are able to do this by selling drugs or hitting licks (another term for doing any kind of theft). Another reason is peer pressure. Seeing your older brother, cousin, or anyone you look up to in a gang will initially lead you to wanting to join a gang too. Seeing how cool they are and how they have protection towards anything. Some might say gangs are like a brotherhood. Does that remind you of anything?

Fraternities are a lot like gangs they both go through initiation to get in and must obey the so-called leader. Just look at gangs as an underworld fraternity that instead of planning mixers and parties they plan crimes and instead of helping each other with their college work. Instead of throwing keggers or helping the other member get a guy or girl they help each other hit licks or sell drugs.

I interviewed some gang members who would rather not be named, for obvious reasons, and asked them why they joined them and what’s a typical a day in the life of a “gangbanger”. One told me “ I joined because I was going through a lot of problems with my family and being with the gang took my mind off of it, my big brother was in it too and the gang was always at my house because of him so I just figured why not just join. Usually through the day all we do is just chill, smoke, drink and sometimes go out together to clubs which just cause problems because we run into other gang members and we have to fight or murk them.” Another told me “ Being in a gang is not just something anyone can do it takes a lot of guts to be able to do it because you don’t get to run free and do what you want you are told an order and no matter how crazy you have to follow through with it.”

Gangs are on the rise and growing rapidly by recruiting peewees (gangbanger in training). While law enforcement tries to contain them it seems to be a never ending battle of back and forth.

Fried Oreos, elephant ears and extremely long corn dogs. The Drop of Fear, roller coasters and the Gravitron! The fair is back in town! Every year the South Florida Fair attracts people of all walks of life to come enjoy the delicious sustenance and the psychotic rides.

This year, a lot of new rides have entered the fair but the remains from last year still seem to be everyones favorite. You have the The Fireball, going about 150 ft high into the air, while rotating in a sickening circular motion. Also, the roller coasters are so thrilling and seem to have everyone running back in line as soon as they got off. Then you have the scariest ride of all, The Magnum! Throwing you upside down, round and round, back and forth. Putting you in a place of feeling both nauseous and extremely anxious. Making your adrenaline pump!

Some people think its better to eat before strapping yourself on the rides, while others find that to be nonsense. Personally, you will see me eating before and after the rides and i hardly get sick, but i have some friends who have a light stomach.

Pratik Patel and Dan Wunderlich both advise you to eat after the rides. Wunderlich mentions its probably a better idea because he doesn’t want to waste his money, if you catch his drift.

On another note, Adam thinks whoever visits the south Florida fair should definitely go watch the pig races. “Its amusing to watch because the pigs are fat and funny” says Adam. Pig Races are a big part of the fair. Betting on a winning pig can give you the chance to win amazing prizes. And who doesn’t love to watch the pigs race down the little dirt road?

One main attraction is the Mechanical Bull. Most people would find it impossible, however, one courageous man overcame this obstacle. Throughout the night, competitions are set up to where one lucky person could have the chance to be rewarded with different amounts of money, ranging from $100-$300. The hardest competition for anyone is staying on the bull for longer than 8 seconds. As easy as it may sound, when your the one riding the bull you know how much sweat and tears it takes to stay on. It flings you back and forth, side to side and the only thing on your mind is the money.

Funny, yet real. Crazy but still so hard to walk away from. Thats right, its the hypnotist show.
Some things might scar you for life. For instance, watching a group of males around 16-18 years old being back up dancers to a MALE “Shakira”. Or maybe watching your mom say “Who’s your daddy?” while running around like a crazy women. The things you see are so hilarious and its a must-see at the fair.

Depending on which day you go, the entertainment never fails. Bands are always playing, music is always heard and famous people are flooding the perimeter. Some people who are extremely famous now only started at small fairs in their town. After riding rides its good to take a break and just relax to some live music. All different types of music is played and there is about 5 stages that you can attend to hear the different sounds. They have reggae, rock, rap and even salsa.

As soon as you enter the fair, you enter a place called the Expo Center. Every year the Expo Center changes its theme and this year the theme was Nature and Everglades. Inside, you can find sculptures of waterfalls and man-made forest models. Some schools even participate in making models for the fair.

The romantic night lighting, stuffed animals and the delicious greasy food all make for a fantastic night at the south Florida fair that only comes around once every year.
