Haiti recovery begins

Written by Daylin Valdes and Christian Arteaga, Staff Writers

A devastating magnitude 7.0  earthquake attacked Haiti on Tuesday, 12 January 2010. The earthquake occurred in the west of Port-Au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. It put every thing in Haiti upside down. Thousands of deaths has been confirmed. The streets are piled up with dead bodies. Haiti falls in the category of the poorest country, therefore it wouldn’t be possible for the island to come back on their own without any outside help. The damage, as well as human loss, caused by this earthquake is immeasurable. Since then, the support and relief actions are being taken and many attempts are being made to save the lives of those who receive severe injuries due to the earthquake. The U.S is doing a lot to help the devastated country. Scores of U.S troops landed on the lawn of what remains of the Presidential Palace. The U.S is sending military troops, health care professionals, food and supplies to the island nation to help with the devastation. It is really heartbreaking to watch does poor people of Haiti remove the rubbles in hope to find any of their family members.
Approximately a week later another earthquake hit Haiti again with a magnitude of 6.1. The scarcity of basic necessities of life as well as lack of sources out there on the island has turned the nation into a group of looters and opportunists. There are reports and videos that people have gone extremely aggressive and they’re looting out the few food shops remaining. So far they have said that there are no reports of any further damages caused by the fresh quake. This is very sad and touching, we need to help those poor people because they need us. You can help in many ways donating money and necessities that they need such as medications over the counter, first aid kits, blankets, flashlights, batteries, Toiletries (shampoo, soap, toothpaste), baby wipes, baby formula, diapers, baby clothes. There are dozens more items; this is just a starter list. In school we’re collecting things so if anyone wants to help bring the things to school and the students of SGA will pick it up during your third hour. That way we can help does peoples that need of our support and specially kids because a lot of them lost their parents.
