Sports we should have

Written by Dan Wunderlich

Lee Coppersmith, an all-American playing for Boca Raton High School, is on a scholarship to John Hopkins College. Why don’t we know about this stellar athlete? It’s because he plays lacrosse and most schools don’t offer that sport. Robert Landeck, Michael Lipin, and Michael McCready are all-Americans in a sport most of this school’s students don’t know exists. These kids have bright futures thanks to this unknown sport. Lacrosse is just one of many sports that we are deprived from competing in.
Fantastic sports like rugby, lacrosse, racquetball, water polo, and even hockey are all played at high school level. Hockey being mainly played in northern high schools, but that’s besides the point. Jupiter High School has a rugby club, not even a legitimate team, just a club and allows kids of all kinds come out and participate. A chance for kids to be active and be apart of a team squandered for what reason? I could not say for I am not the head honcho of this school. I do know though, if a chance to play sports like these were given to this school the spots would go as if they’re bananas to a starving monkey.
Last week I mentioned this article I was to write to my friends, we were playing racquetball at the time, and they all said in almost perfect unison “you should put racquetball.” That’s about ten kids who would jump as soon as you said racquetball club. Now I have no idea if other schools have a racquetball club/league/association/affiliation/organization/coalition/establishment/etc. but I do know that this school wouldn’t mind having a chance to have their own.
Now when I pitched the idea of water polo to my friends I was only kidding, but the look came on their face. The look of sudden realization of unpolished brilliance. My friend Tommy then goes on to convince me that it wouldn’t be so hard making a team, if we can manage a swim team we could manage a polo team. I sat back listening to my friends talk about this sport and a few others and saw that there is a passion to compete in this school so fierce that they would take to complete enigmatic activities such as these.
If there are thoughts of forming clubs such as these floating around in this school of ours I encourage entirely and completely that you push to form them. I myself have thought of a rugby club. Sports in club form would allow athletes from other sports stay active in a fun and competitive way in the off season. If I had a hair on my butt to go and say something to our administration about how this school would benefit so greatly from sports like these, but alas I know that my pleas would fall upon deaf ears. I’ll say once again, if anyone can, bring these sports to our school.
